Even worse, when cottonseed oil is exposed to the high heat used during manufacturing, a toxic compound is created. This byproduct is called stearic acid. Stearates can delay the absorption of nutrients, and have been reported to weaken immune systems. As scary as it sounds, this harmful compound makes up as much as 5% of some supplements.
Additives in Pills and Capsules
Many so-called "quality" vitamins and supplements contain additives--inactive components. Without these additives, tablets and pills would crumble into powders. Some additives are used to make pills smoother so they glide easily down your throat. Ground sand, or silica, is often used to keep moisture from entering a capsule and making it clump. Sound healthy?
Silicon Dioxide is often contained in supplements. This anti-caking agent may comprise up to 3% of a vitamin formula. Manufacturers of glass, abrasives, stones, and electrical components use silicon dioxide. The Material Safety Data Sheet says that silicon dioxide is a hazardous chemical requiring safety precautions when handling.
Liquid Vitamin Additives
Most liquid vitamin supplements contain sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate, which can ultimately lead to cancer. Combined with ascorbic acid, or vitamin C it can become an environment conducive for the formation of benzene. Benzene is a dangerous environmental toxin used in the manufacture of detergents, plastics, nylons and other chemicals. Benzene has been determined by The Department of Health and Human Services to be a known cancer causing agent. The EPA has also determined that benzene is carcinogenic to humans.
